Custom keycaps
Jan 19, 2025I like building keyboards and part of the fun has always been selecting keycaps. My latest keyboard has per-key RGB LEDs; I decided to lean into this, but I’ve never really liked how a lot of translucent caps look, so I decided to make my own. The keycap legends are mostly decorative for me, so I decided to lean into the combining the letter legend with the illumination and have a mostly-transparent cap whose upper surface is mostly the legend.
The keyboard is a Dilemma Max keyboard; it is a split wired keyboard. I ordered it in kit form and soldered in the LEDs and switches. The switches were selected to show as much light as possible; they are Kailh Clione Limacina Switches .
I used a combination of the typefaces Owner and A Friend In Deed , becasue these were the kind of extremely bold look I was going for.
This is a work in progress; some keycaps need tweaking, there are quality issues in the FDM print, I need to generate more kecaps, and I’m debating other tweaks. Not done, but it’s a start.
